Delegate More Effectively

Value

Delegation is one of the most valuable training tools available to the manager. A manager must make it a valuable experience for all parties involved.

Motivation

Delegation can be one of the best motivational tools available to a manager. Providing a developmental plan for an employee is one of the best methods for retaining good employees.

Time Management

Delegation is the key ingredient to time management and allows the manager to concentrate on the important tasks, not just the urgent tasks. The use of a planning and administration system that allows you to track delegated assignments can improve performance and communication.

Maximize

Delegation can help maximize the interests, strengths, and contribution of both the employee and the team. Stretching the employee can be essential to their growth and development.

Multiplier of Productivity

Delegation can be a multiplier of productivity. Productivity and performance improvement are key components to a results-oriented culture.

Planning

Delegation takes planning. Make a special plan for delegation by listing all of your tasks and then creating categories such as the things only I can do, things that can be simplified, things that can be eliminated, and things that can be delegated (Simplify, Eliminate, or Delegate).

Monitor Progress

Delegation must be monitored by providing appropriate feedback with measurable results.

Set Levels

Set levels of delegation and formulate goals to move as many people as possible to the highest level.

Challenge the Potential

Consider delegation to be the greatest challenge for you to develop their potential and to use more of their abilities. Succeeding with these challenges will move the entire organization forward.

Feedback

Provide feedback on performance and make it a continuous process. Feedback must be given daily, weekly, or monthly. Communication is the key to organizational success in a results oriented culture.

Time Management Tip

Peak performance in the work environment is usually pre-determined.

Last month, an employee survey revealed that the majority of employees (over 70%) performed best between the hours of 8 AM and noon. I have always felt and promoted that the peak performance period for most of us was approximately 2 to 2.5 hours after you got to your work environment.

Less than 18% of those surveyed stated that they performed at their best after 2 PM. It is important that you perform your high payoff activities when you are in your peak performance period and hold your least important projects for the afternoon.

Maybe we should ask Nike to change their slogan to: “Just Do It! – before lunch.

5 Tips to Help You Become a Better Time Manager

Time management is personal management and it is our responsibility to manage the amount of time we spend on an activity or at an event so that we can satisfy our Work/Life Balance. Most of us are being asked to do more in less time and we are also expected to do it with less stress. If we cannot manage or control time, then we cannot manage or control our lives. Here are five tips to help you become a better time manager:

Schedule Your Time Effectively – a good time manager not only schedules their events or appointments but schedules any activities including tasks and “to do’s”.

Maximize your efficiency with electronic formats – a good time manager will make sure that they understand all the features and benefits of their electronic planning and administration system, whether it be Outlook, Lotus Notes, or another electronic platform.

Eliminate the “Multi-tasking” Attitude - a good time manager completes one task or assignment before moving on to the next task or assignment.

Be a Better Project Manager – a good time manager knows more than when they started and ended an assignment or task. They guesstimate the time it takes to complete the task or assignment when they start the task or assignment and then grade themselves on how successful they were with the guesstimate. Those time managers who come within 5% of their guesstimate can give themselves an “A” in time management.

Prioritize, Prioritize, Prioritize - A good time manager spends the time each day to prioritize their activities each and every day. Many time managers use a system that reflects what must be done today and what would they like to do today.

Why Hire a Coach? By Richard Hohmann

Work–Life Balance still a Key Issue for Men

A new Workplace Insights survey found out that half the moms say they split their time equally between work and home while just thirty – two percent of the men said they balance their work-life equally.

Men have a more difficult time of balancing their work-life and really would prefer more flexibility that would enhance their work-life balance. Flexibility doesn’t replace good time-management skills and most male managers need to improve their time management skills. They attempt to use the latest electronic devices to compliment their lifestyle but end up spending thirty percent more time working with the device as opposed to just writing it down, on a legal pad or whatever is available.

The use of a paper planning and administration system may save you up to thirty minutes a day, but who’s counting? Make sure you use the tools that compliment your work-life goals. A Business Coach who is well versed in Time Management techniques can offer you options that may help satisfy that work-life dilemma. Remember, just because you think it should work better, doesn’t always mean it does.
